Fricadelles

Ingredients
- 1.1 kilogram beef mince
- 2.bread roll, grated; or substitute 2 tablespoons matzo meal
- 3.1 tomato, ripe, grated
- 4.1 onion, medium, grated
- 5.1 potato, medium, grated
- 6.125 ml water, cold
- 7.1 chicken stock cube, crushed
- 8.2 ml black pepper
- 9.10 ml salt
- 10.2 ml ginger, ground
- 11.oil, for frying
- 12.2 onions, sliced and fried; for topping
Method
- 1.Grate the bread roll, tomato, onion and potato and add to the meat.
- 2.Add water, crushed bouillon cube, seasonings and spices and mix with a fork.
- 3.Shape into patties and fry in oil until nicely browned and cooked through.
- 4.Set on platter and top with fried onion slices.
Notes
- Fricadelles are a traditional South African meat patty, related to the Dutch 'frikadel'. The grated vegetables and bread keep them moist.
- Matzo meal can be used in place of bread roll to make this recipe suitable for Passover.
