Mock Beef Stroganoff

Ingredients
- 1.1 kilogram steak, tender cut, cut into strips
- 2.3 onions, large, coarsely chopped
- 3.2 green peppers, coarsely diced
- 4.0.75 cup tomato sauce, 200 ml
- 5.4 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 6.2 tablespoon HP sauce, brown sauce
- 7.410 gram mushrooms, whole tin, canned
- 8.1 sachet orlywhip, non-dairy whipping cream substitute; 125 ml; whipped before use
Method
- 1.Brown the strips of steak.
- 2.Drain and season with salt and pepper.
- 3.In the same oil that you browned the steak, gently fry the onions until golden.
- 4.Add the green peppers and sauté.
- 5.Replace the meat in the pot with the onions and green peppers.
- 6.Mix together the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, H.P. sauce and the whole tin of mushrooms.
- 7.Pour over the meat mixture.
- 8.Simmer until tender. Adjust the seasonings.
- 9.Just before serving, whip the orlywhip and stir through the stew.
- 10.Serve on rice.
Notes
- 'Orlywhip' is a South African non-dairy whipping cream substitute. Substitute with whipping cream or a non-dairy equivalent.
- 'H.P. sauce' is HP Brown Sauce, a British condiment widely used in South African cooking.
- Called 'mock' because it uses cream substitute rather than sour cream of the original Russian dish.
