Ingredients
- 1.1 cup plain flour
- 2.1 tablespoon baking powder, heaped
- 3.salt, pinch
- 4.1 cup water
- 5.oil, for deep frying
- 6.0.75 cup golden syrup, Lyle's brand; melted; or more as needed
Method
- 1.Sift dry ingredients together.
- 2.Add water slowly and mix to a batter.
- 3.Let stand and thicken for approximately 1 hour in the fridge.
- 4.Heat oil for deep frying. Drop dessertspoons of batter into the hot oil in different shapes.
- 5.Drain on paper towel (carlton paper).
- 6.Pour melted golden syrup over and serve.
Notes
- Carlton paper = South African brand of paper towel/kitchen paper.
- Lyle's Golden Syrup is the specified syrup — any golden syrup works.
- These are simple fried dough fritters, similar to small doughnuts, served drenched in syrup.
- Resting the batter in the fridge for an hour improves texture.
