Ingredients
- 1.maatjies herring, sliced
- 2.black pepper, freshly ground
- 3.onion, finely sliced
- 4.oil, to trickle over
Method
- 1.Slice herring and lay down on a platter.
- 2.Sprinkle with freshly ground pepper.
- 3.Cover with a layer of sliced onion.
- 4.Sprinkle with some more ground pepper.
- 5.Trickle over oil. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Maatjies (also matjes) = Dutch-style salt-cured young herring, very popular in South African Jewish homes.
